Machu Picchu, in the Peruvian Andes, is thought to have been an Incan royal retreat. Built in the 15th century and abandoned less than a century later, the distant site's magnificent brickwork continues to astound. Huge multi-ton stone blocks are properly bonded without mortar or cement.
